Guest Artist Bios:
Bruce ‘Sequoia’ Koster
Bruce ‘Sequoia’ Koster was born in Los Angeles, California and was raised in Sunset, Utah – spending half of his life in engineering, which sent him traveling to many places around the world. The other half of his life is spent tinkering with the ten hobbies he plays with at home. An Expert Woodcarver with multiple awards is where he gained an interest in
making Native American Flutes while hand carving the ‘block’ to ornament his flutes. His engineering skills, coupled with woodworking knowledge helped him to craft some very fine quality flutes.
Bruce also has a great love for music. ‘Self-expression along with improvisation reveals the inner soul of the native flute player’. He immersed himself in the native culture to gain an understanding of the values of these people that have long-held traditions and are deeply connected to nature in all of its beauty. Playing the native flute while out in nature brings him one of the greatest forms of relaxation.
Bruce attended the Flute Harvest, Native Flute School at
Encino, CA and is looking forward to attending the Zion Canyon Flute School next month in Springdale, UT.
Mariachi Zavala
Mariachi Zavala was founded in 1994 by Gonzalo Zavala and his three sons, Marcos, Arturo, and Oscar. They have performed throughout Utah and the intermountain West. Since 2013, they have added Benjamin Hernandez on violin, Xavier Reyes on trumpet, and Christopher Domingues on Vihuela. Arturo and Oscar Zavala continue to perform in Eugene, Oregon and Terre Haute, Indiana.
Randin Graves
Randin Graves is one of the world’s leading non-indigenous proponents of the didgeridoo, having performed on three continents, lectured at the National Museum of Australia, and lived in a remote Aboriginal community for 5 years, originally on a Fulbright Fellowship with a project on the instrument. He now lives in Salt Lake City, UT, as a composer, performer and teacher.
Established in 2004, WDPB is a competitive and performing Bagpipe Band based out of Bountiful, Utah. Wearing the MacTavish tartan, they perform all over Northern Utah and have completed in the Western US, Canada, and the UK. They have attended the World Pipe Band Championships held in Glasgow Scotland. They are a proud member of The Western United States Pipe Band Association.
Wasatch Alphorns is nonprofit collective of alphorn players in the state of Utah who are promoting the art of alphorn playing. Members come from up and down the Wasatch Front Area. Their public performances consist of great music, traditional Swiss-inspired costumes, a brief history lesson, and of course, a great photo opportunity.
They love to share the alphorn. They rehearse weekly in Salt Lake City thanks to a partnership with the Utah Arts Alliance (https://utaharts.org/) and are always open to new players. They usually have a horn or two available to loan for rehearsals. No prior Alphorn experience required. Checkout their website at https://www.wasatchalphorns.org/ for more information.
